Big Black Avocado Trees Blooming in Southern California

Writer's picture: Avocado Tree GrowersAvocado Tree Growers

As January wraps up here in Southern California, the Big Black (also known as Negro Grande or Grande Negro) avocado tree has begun to bloom.

In this post, we’re sharing some photos of these beautiful flowers to highlight a unique characteristic of avocado cultivars, the ability to have both male and female flowers at the same time. This is a trait that is more pronounced in certain varieties, like the Little Cado and Big Black.

The Big Black avocado tree is a rare variety native to northern California, known for its remarkable cold-hardiness. It produces large fruit almost twice the size of Mexicola Grande avocados with a fantastic taste and a heavy, consistent yield.

As you'll see in the photo below, Big Black shows both the A and B flower types.

Not only is Big Black cold-hardy, but it's also heat-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for a variety of climates. With its reliable production, this tree is truly remarkable.
