Is your area too cold for growing avocados? Maybe not. There are varieties of avocado that can withstand freezing temperatures. If your winter lows don’t dip below about 20F you have the chance to grow cold hardy avocado varieties outdoor and if you live in even colder zones where freezing is a regular event, you can have a potted avocado tree although it will need to be brought inside until the last frost has passed.
Varieties like Palo’dOro, Negro Grande, Puebla, Stewart, Fuerte, Ettinger, Mexicola Grande, Oro Negro, Zutano are notable for their greater cold tolerance. Remember the younger trees that are in the ground (their first years) must be protected from the colder weather either by covering them or by other methods.
