Avocado trees can handle mild frost conditions, some varieties can handle even more.
Frost freezes the sap in avocado trees, which results in cell damage. A mild frost might only result in minor damage to the outer leaves of the tree. A severe frost may damage leaves, fruits and branches of larger trees and kill younger trees. So the best way is to protect trees as much as possible.
If cold temperatures are on the way, it’s necessary to protect young avocado trees especially through their first couple winters.
First make sure your avocado tree is well watered and hydrated so it can handle the stress of low temperatures better then Build a frame around them and cover the structure, that will retain warmth. Covering is the easiest and most efficient way to help a young avocado tree, you may even cover all sides for maximum protection during a freeze event. For bigger trees you may cover the whole tree with frost blankets if needed.
