When is a good time to prune an avocado tree?

How to prune an avocado tree

As Avocado Trees are evergreen, light pruning can be done any time of the year. Heavy pruning should only be done in the early part of the year—January, February and March.

Pruning in spring encourages new growth, while pruning in winter controls tree size and shape.

Pruning keeps the trees short also more light shines into the trees which results in more fruit being borne on the lower branches. If you are planning to do a major pruning it is suggested to do it over time as an example prune off the biggest branch one year, then the next branch in the second year, etc. by reducing the size over several years the tree is put under less stress and the bonus is you might also have some fruits each pruning year.

It is important to know that sometimes pruning creates open areas inside the tree that expose branches to sunlight, Paint the exposed branches with diluted, white latex paint. The white paint acts like a sunscreen and helps reflect sunlight and heat and prevent sun burning of the exposed branches. Remember to avoid unnecessary pruning.

So why do you want to prune your avocado trees? To keep them in size? For tree balance? To train your young avocado tree to the shape you like?
